Subtitle: Where’s the Off button?!?

Besides one post over a month ago, I haven’t blogged for some time. It would appear that I’ve quit, but I have not.

First and foremost, blogging is writing, and I will never stop writing. There is plenty more to write about than there is to talk about. That being said, I suppose that I’ll never stop blogging. Second, blogging has always been a method of communication. It’s never been a business model per se, even with all the business circles that I’ve penetrated in the past few years.

The very core of the matter was self expression, and everything that followed was a result of that motive and a means to getting the message across.

In most creative endeavors one must know when to step away and take a break. Burnout, or worse, existing while becoming stale and ineffective is always a looming threat. As for accolades they don’t deserve endearment. They’re relics. Acknowledge them and you’re a servant, value them and you’re obsolete. The funny thing about popularity is that with it you already have one foot in the grave. And yet, everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.

Let’s be honest, there’s a problem with bloggers. Every blogger thinks that they are a great blogger. If a blogger is popular and well known, then he or she will think that they are a great blogger. If a blog generates money, then a blogger will think that they are a great blogger. Bloggers that do not make money but have great traffic, still think that they are great bloggers. Even when a blog is making no money or generating little traffic; is not well written or updated frequently; is not influential or innovative; is self-hosted, or is not a blogger will still consider themselves as a great blogger. Good bloggers are hard to come across. So when I hear that there is a great blogger in the room, I look for the bar – or the door.

You want to be great? Blaze magnificently? Master the good rules of blogging. Then break them, and make your own.

That’s my advice.

As for my blog, I’ve decided to temporarily put it into hibernation. I’ve put into it as much as I wanted to take out by meeting and surpassing my goals. Oh, there are a few things that I could have done different or better, but sticking around for perfection is best left for the neurotic. Believe it or not, I’ve anticipated this for years. The timing and sequence of events however, were obscure. But, here we are.

This is what I call when the god-head takes control. When the godhead is running the show you better step aside, because nothing you try to do will matter. You’re on auto-pilot, so enjoy the ride.

Here’s what’s happening next:

I will be personal-blogging here

This space will be used to publish announcements and updates

This blog will get a makeover

That’s it. More later.

I’m breaking a few months of silence only to be – silent.

What am I talking about?

The use of the internet as a vehicle of free speech and innovation has always been important to me. As a matter of fact, I started blogging because there were some things that I did not like and I sought to help change those things that I did not like. SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act) can be used as an internet censorship tool.

Free speech and the internet matter.

So why, are most major news networks silent on the issue of SOPA?

On Jan 18th, my blog will darken and join the Internet blackout initiative to bring awareness and protest SOPA.

This can also be meant in the area of media where roles are taken up by actors to add a color spalsh to the big screen.

Then there is the other area that takes up culture and socioeconomics. This is an area of much passion as it discusses the hearts of people and many times when we say diversity in the media it is meant more than seeing mirror images of ourselves, but our stories.

Consider this the next time the topic of diversity comes up.

Black Heritage month however, was more recognized, and I can recall that going back to grade school.

Things have changed as schools recognize it in their classrooms now, and companies often advertise their names and products in association with the month long hat tip.

In many way a whole generation was lost. Some pockets of younger generations rebelled against their parent’s ignorance and reclaimed their heritage through music, and the arts among other outlets. Yet still, others have marched off toward assimilation and acknowledge Hispanic Heritage month either by raising a glass or watching last night’s Alma Awards show.

To follow up on the Blogger vs Blogger idea I had last week I’m posting the results of the first challenge. But, before I do I realized that I never explained where the idea came from.

Taking cue from WordlessWednesday (which I think is very cool, but just not my thing) I thought about bloggers challenging one another in a friendly competition. Immediately, Spy Vs Spy popped into my head. But it’s not a “new” idea.

The very first blogger vs blogger, was done by a chess blogger named Dana, back in December last year. She made no claim for originating the concept, and just probably thought that it was just a cool idea. I followed suit.

“Everything’s a copy of a copy of a copy.” -Fight Club

Now on with the challenge.

Blogger vs Blogger

J.R. Graña accepted my challenge with Words With Friends.

Here’s how it went:

Blogger vs Blogger: Louis Pagan vs J.R. Graña

The opening was pretty standard and pretty tied up.

J.R. took a slight lead and maintained it for most of mid game.

Toward the end of the game it was pretty much neck and neck until the very last pieces.

Winner: J.R. Graña

It was a great game. We are doing another for a best 2 out of 3, but I’m getting my butt kicked due to a lack of vowels very early in the game.

For the next challenge, I think I have to dance on a typewriter or something.

I started off this post by writing: What would Einstein say about social media today?

“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

-Albert Einstein

And then I said “Louis, you know better than that.” I could have worked this quote in to fit into this post, but truth be known – Einstein made this comment in regards to the Atomic bomb This is a great example of media literacy.

Social Media has not reached any obvious compromise to our humanity, or will have an immediate and destructive impact that such pithy statements need be said.

So, just what Albert Einstein say about Social Media? Maybe, “Eureka! eureka!”
