Social Media Literacy

Subtitle: WYB – Watch Your Back in social media!!!

As netizens connect and grow, so do more unsavory individuals look to take advantage of those communications.

Having a background in technology, I’ve seen many cases of users unknowingly causing computer problems which easily could of been prevented if they new more about the computer environment.

With this in mind, imagine what can happen to an individual who unknowing falls prey to a computer virus or a phishing attempt, that could of been prevented if the knowledge of the characteristics of such attacks could of been recognized.

Social Media Literacy (SML), permits us to identify such threats.

SML goes beyond the knowledge of  pushing your content through different social media channels; it involves the critique of received media.  If media literacy broadly applies to digital media,  then SML would be specific to social media platforms.

Tips

Here are some suggestions for Twitter:

- If you see many of your friends sharing the same strange new Twitter icon, or tweeting the same strange message, it’s probably a hoax, or they’ve already fell victim to one.

- Be weary of tweets that contain news or calls to action, without having links.  This may be a prank/hoax, and the joke may be on you.

Robin Hood airport is closed. You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!

- If tweet contains all CAPS or multiple symbols, take heed!

- “Think before you click.”  Is this too good to be true?  Do you know the user?

- Mouseover the link and make sure you can verify the link (enable status bar in most web browsers).  If you can’t see it, or the link looks like bad news (IP number, instead of URL), the WYB!

- Does the persons tweets have a lot of links in many of them?  They have an incessant need to get you somewhere.

I can count on one hand how many times I’ve used the ‘block’ feature on Twitter.  This is because, I spend so much time on the internet that I’ve developed a heightened awareness of what looks right and what looks suspect, so I don’t spend too much time blocking people from my feed…I just unfriend them.

If someone is trying to take advantage of others, and you want to take the extra step then, submit their name to Twitter Help for investigation.

Has anyone experienced, or have more suggestions for Twitter or any other site?

You Are Social Media’s Limitation

November 16th, 2009 No comments

Subtitle:  Learn and Practice Languages Using Social Media

With all the head-scratching and trial/errors, social media will undoubtedly become standardized, as people discover what works and what does not.  There will develop a safety net on the ‘proper’ way on how to pursue a social media campaign.  In actuality, this already exists.

But, what if this ’standardization’ is just the tip of the iceberg?  What if that is only 10% of what social media can do?  What if we were grandiose in our ideas and believed we could use social media for anything we imagined?

What if?

Here is an article which I consider an great example of the unlimitedness and unfathomable aspects social media has to offer.  The undertones present, displays the impregnable and impossible categorization of what social media is and can perform.  This is why the title states that YOU are the only limitation.  Read the below, and dare to imagine.

HOW TO: Learn and Practice Languages Using Social Media

Given the globalized online world we live in, learning a new language has never been easier — nor as interactive, interesting, and social! From Twitter to blogs to social networks, there are numerous ways you can start your social language learning and keep it up while making new friends.

The landscape of social media offers a wealth of resources and information where people can discuss and expand on hobbies, interests and passions – while creating connections with others who feel the same way. Learning a language is no different.

The Social Media Evolution

Subtitle: The Social Web

You’re just going through a phase
IF you define social media as Facebook or Twitter then you may believe it is a fad – and you’d be correct! But if you define social media as sharing, connecting and online conversations then you know social media is the future.

Revolution, set to evolve
If you understand the leverage of social media then your social media footprint is present on multiple portals.  The mechanics of administering these multiple identities presents a challenge and problem. Therefore, the streamlining of social media is the natural next step toward a social web:

Today’s social experience is disjointed because consumers have separate identities in each social network they visit. A simple set of technologies that enable a portable identity will soon empower consumers to bring their identities with them — transforming marketing, eCommerce, CRM, and advertising. IDs are just the beginning of this transformation, in which the Web will evolve step by step from separate social sites into a shared social experience.

Web 3.0

What we will see next year:

  • A mainstream move to open-source platforms.
  • Users will have the ability to traverse the internet with their social media profiles “in tow.”
  • True ‘real time’ experience with applications that allow people to interact independently from current social media silos such as Facebook/Twitter.

The future web will remove current bias concerning social media.  If you don’t like Facebook, or Twitter or any other social media silo, web 3.0 will remove those brands and boundaries.  People (and consumers) will turn to the web in droves.  The internet will take on a dominant, mega-media presence.  We may safely say that Web 2.0 has set the stage for Web 3.0.
